Melanoma

Melanomas are skin tumours that may be benign or malignant. They are seen almost exclusively in grey horses, up to 80% of grey horses older than fifteen have at least one melanoma. The most common sites for melanomas are under the tail and they are almost always black in colour.

The tumours follow one of three growth patterns. They can either grow very slowly and never spread, grow slowly but then suddenly grow very quickly and spread or grow rapidly from the onset.

Treatment: No treatment is needed unless the tumours are interfering with the horse’s function.
