Subluxation (dislocation)
Subluxation of the pastern joint can be a congenital defect in arabs, however, is more commonly seen due to a traumatic injury e.g. foals jumping from a height.
Treatment
Treatment involves casting the joint with the limb flexed for 8 weeks followed by 6 months box rest. An alternative is to surgically fuse the joint (arthrodesis). Due to minimal range of motion of the pastern joint, a lameness is not usually noticed follwing successful fusion.
