Fractures
There are two bones in the pastern region of the horse, both of which can be damaged. The middle phalanx (P2) is below the pastern joint and the proximal phalanx (P1) is above the pastern joint. Most fractures of either of these bones will show a sudden, severe lameness that often improves with a few days box rest.
Diagnosis
X-rays are required for diagnosis and to assess treatment options.
Treatment
Some of these fractures can be treated by immobilization (cast/bandage) and box rest. It is often the case, however, that the fracture must be repaired and/or any fragments of bone removed surgically for the animal to return to soundness.
