Angular limb deformity

This condition is seen in foals and is characterized by deviation of the limb from the midline i.e. the leg is bent rather than being in a straight position. There are two forms both caused by excessive growth of bone on one side of the leg compared to the other. Varus is medial deviation, bent inwards, and valgus is lateral deviation, bent outwards.

Treatment

Mild cases will usually resolve with box exercise restriction, box rest. In more severe cases the limb can be immobilized (cast/bandage) or surgery performed to either increase bone growth on one side or reduce it on the other.
