Sesamoiditis

This condition is when there are boney changes involving the sesamoid bones. The most common cause is damage to the bone due to the pressure exerted on it by the suspensory ligament. Affected animals will either have a sudden lameness (acute) or have a low grade persistent lameness (chronic).

Diagnosis

X-rays and also ultrasonography (scanning), to assess the suspensory ligament, are required for diagnosis and to assess treatment options.

Treatment

Prolonged box rest and support of the limb (bandaging).
