Luxation (dislocation)
Luxation usually produces a sudden, severe lameness caused by trauma, for example getting a foot caught or during fast turning.
Diagnosis
X-rays are required for diagnosis and to assess treatment options.
Treatment
The joint must be re-aligned and then immobilized (cast). In some cases, if there is a complicated fracture, breakdown of the suspensory apparatus or an open wound, treatment can be very challenging and a return to soundness cannot be guaranteed. Degenerative joint disease (DJD) can develop as a secondary complication of the condition.
