Fractures of the ulna

Fractures of the ulna usually occur following trauma, e.g. a kick, and affect the upper portion (olecranon). Most cases will show a sudden, severe lameness with pain on palpation, heat and swelling at the point of the elbow.

Diagnosis

X-rays are required for diagnosis and to assess treatment options.

Treatment

Fractures that are not displaced and don’t involve the joint can be treated with box rest. However, those that are displaced or involve the joint must be treated surgically under a general anaesthetic.
