Angular limb deformity

This condition is seen in foals and is characterized by deviation of the limb from the midline i.e. the leg is bent rather than being in a straight position. There are two forms both caused by excessive growth of bone on one side of the leg compared to the other. Varus is medial deviation, bent inwards, and valgus is lateral deviation, bent outwards.

Diagnosis

X-rays are required to assess all the structures within the carpus.

Treatment

Minor cases will spontaneously correct themselves in the first week of life. If this is not the case then box rest and foot trimming are often required. In more severe cases, angle greater than 15 degrees or has not improved after 4 weeks rest, the limb can be immobilized (cast/bandage) or surgery performed to either increase bone growth on one side or reduce it on the other.
