Accessory carpal bone fracture

The accessory carpal bone is located at the back of the knee and is usually fractured in horses that race over fences, steeple chasers or eventers. Affected horses can show a variable degree of lameness with some sound by the time the fracture is noticed.

Diagnosis

X-rays are required for diagnosis.

Treatment

The fracture is usually treated with 6 weeks immobilization (cast/bandage) then a few months box rest. The fracture can also be surgically fixed. Regardless of the treatment used most horses will become sound providing they are given enough rest. Fractures of the accessory carpal bone can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
