Gaseous Distention

Gaseous distention usually involves the large intestines and can be caused by them becoming displaced, they have moved to a different position which causes gas to build up, or can occur secondarily to an impaction.

Signs

The severity of the colic signs will vary between animals but most show moderate signs of pain with a normal heart rate and mucous membrane colour. In some cases the distention can be seen simply from looking at the horse.

Diagnosis

The intestine that is distended can be felt on rectal exam.

Treatment

Horses are often lunged and given pain killers to try and help move the gas and the intestines back into place. Surgery is required to release the gas, decompression, if the patient is not responding.
