Wolf Teeth

Wolf teeth are rudimentary premolar teeth seen as small pointy teeth just in front of the larger cheek teeth and have no real function in modern horses. Some horses never get wolf teeth, however, having up to four is possible, although in most horses they are usually only present on the upper jaw. It was always the norm for all wolf teeth to be removed, however, nowadays most vets are of the opinion that they don’t necessarily need removing unless they are deemed to be causing a problem as they are far enough back not to come into contact with the bit.

In cases where the horse is having bitting problems or the wolf tooth is painful to palpate, blind (have not erupted through the gum) or is abnormal the tooth should be removed. This is a relatively simple procedure that can be performed in a sedated animal.
